MIRAMAR — Shirley Branca Memorial Park in Miramar’s historic eastern corridor will undergo improvements as part of an upcoming revenue bond issue. The upgrades will include landscaping, new restroom facilities, perimeter fencing, additional parking and a new band shell.
“The park is scheduled for an update that will continue to enhance the city’s quality of life menu,” said Vernon Hargray, Miramar’s assistant city manager for Operational Services.
The park was built in 1988.
“In its heyday, it was the premier location for many city events such as Miramar’s Annual Tree Lighting ceremony, art festivals and concerts that engaged the community,” said Norma Martin, president of the Miramar Fairway Park Homeowner’s Association.
The addition of a band shell will allow the park to once again become an ideal location for community events. “The band shell will further define the park and complement the programming already present at the Youth Enrichment Center,” said Terrence Griffin, director of the city of Miramar’s Parks & Recreation department.
“The park will provide a venue for the community, schools, families and local residents,” Griffin said. Hargray added that the renovations at the park will complement events residents can engage in at the Ansin Sports Complex, the Miramar Cultural Center and the proposed Miramar Community and Cultural Amphitheater at the Regional Park.
The renovations will cost $1.2 million and will be funded from a $50 million revenue bond which also funds public safety projects including the police headquarters at the Miramar Town Center and infrastructure maintenance for the city’s public buildings.
