Bahamian Independence Day celebrates home rule in the Bahama Islands, which began at 12:01 p.m. on July 10, 1973 when the Bahamas gained total independence from Great Britain and became a sovereign nation, ending 325 years of British rule. The islands are now a commonwealth, with their own prime minister and parliament.
