WEST PALM BEACH — The Sickle Cell Foundation of Palm Beach County and Treasure Coast celebrated World Sickle Cell Day with a panel discussion of representatives from around the world, June 22 at Grace Episcopal Church. Celebrated each June (usually June 19), World Sickle Cell Day is recognized globally and was created by a resolution of the United Nations.
In the United States, Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month, in September, although recognized in Florida, is neither recognized in every state nor globally. The community forum panelists included young South Florida clients with Sickle Cell Disease who represented Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica and the United States. Local residents were able to receive answers regarding the disease’s impacts on the community.
