MIAMI — A Community Remembrance is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday to mark the seventh anniversary of the death of Sherdavia Jenkins, who was killed at age 9 by a stray bullet.
The ceremony will take place at the Sherdavia Jenkins Peace Park on the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard (Northwest 62nd Street) and Northwest 12th Avenue in Miami’s Liberty City neighborhood.
Attendees will also pay honor to the memory of all area children who have died from gunshots.
Sherdavia was the 16th child killed in one year and the ceremony will include a reading of the names and ages of the more than 100 children who have been killed in recent years.
Sherdavia was a bright, promising and popular girl who loved art and excelled in math and chess. She died moments after being struck by a bullet during an altercation between some men as she played with her dolls in front of her Liberty Square home in 2006.
Another noted casualty of gun violence was Rickia Isaac, who was also killed by a random bullet at age 5, two months before Sherdavia’s birth in 1997. Rickia died on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard as she walked home with her babysitter from the King parade.
The remembrance is free and open to the public.
