FORT LAUDERDALE – A sponsorship from Florida Power & Light Company is powering learning through educational programs at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.
The grant underwrote the recent annual Math and Science Day at the Broward Center during which all Bethune Elementary second grade students learned math and science skills through stagecraft.
FPL is also provided the underwriting for the free school day performance of Dr. Kaboom!, which reinforced science skills, at the Parker Playhouse.
During Math and Science Day, students learned through stagecraft about light, color, perspective, balance and counterbalance from Broward Center stage technicians. Meanwhile Chef Shari led classes in Cookie Math that rely on the mastery of mathematical measurements and fractions.
Students from Broward Estates Elementary School in Lauderhill, Tedder Elementary School in Deerfield Beach and Wilton Manors Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale attended Dr. Kaboom!, which creatively blends theater arts with the wonders of scientific exploration using humor and comedy to demonstrate spectacular applications of the physical sciences.
“By connecting the arts directly to the core curriculum, you have the ability to reinforce classroom learning and spark the creativity in students that will help them develop the skills they will need to succeed,” said Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley.

More than 180,000 participants attend the Broward Center’s education programs each year.
