OPA-LOCKA – In recognition of her service to God and the community, Opa-locka Mayor Myra L. Taylor walked down the aisle to receive an honorary doctorate in Divinity from Jacksonville Baptist Theological Seminary, during a ceremony held at the Miami Shores Baptist Church.
“We are privileged to bestow this honor upon (Taylor) for distinguished service to her community, outstanding achievements in humanities, public affairs, education, Christian faith affiliation, and unwavering service to mankind,” said Ray VanderWal, director of the seminary’s North Miami Beach campus.
Taylor, a longtime business owner and public servant, resides in Opa-locka and has been married for 45 years to Bishop John H. Taylor.
They have eight children and many grandchildren. Among many accomplishments, together they established the Vankara Educational Center in 1978, and co-founded The New Beginning Embassy of Praise.
“She looks for ways to relate to people, which makes her successful working in a Christian community,” said Jimmy Burke, a professor at the Seminary. “The institution wanted to recognize her for excelling in the community.”
Jacksonville Baptist Theological Seminary has operated in South Florida for over 20 years.
The Divinity School has a long list of distinguished graduates who serve as ministers and activists in South Florida. More than 35 students graduated during the commencement exercise.
