MIAMI — Henry Crespo Sr. of Miami-Dade County was elected president of the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida at the organization’s 31st Annual Conference at the Doubletree by the Hilton – Orlando at Seaworld.
The vote was taken among from 15 Democratic Black Caucus chapters across the state representing more than 400 members of the historical black political organization founded by attorney Morris M. Milton Sr. in 1983.
Crespo said he plans to immediately focus on recertifying and unifying existing chapters and establishing new chapters for a more respected and powerful political organization.
“The DBCF will develop a strategic action plan, to identify, engage, educate and motivate Democratic voters to affect positive change across the state, in order to impact public policy in areas such as voting rights, health care, immigration and above all the double digit unemployment rate impacting urban and rural communities,” said Crespo, who was elected to a two-year term of office.
Emphasizing the importance of building coalitions with other caucuses and organizations with the same aspirations for improving the lives of Florida residents, Crespo said the DBCF “looks forward to working very closely with Mrs. Allison Tant-Richard, chairwoman of the Florida Democratic Party, to register voters and get them to the polls to elect more Democrats and to defeat Gov. Rick Scott in 2014.”
Lydia Hudson, first vice president of the DBCF, said “Working along with Henry Crespo to make the DBCF a politically astute and powerful voice in the political process of Florida is an exciting and challenging task.
I look forward in using my experience to assist our new President Henry Crespo in the development and implementation of a strategic plan that builds a unified organization and infrastructure. That will empower the million-plus voters and citizens of the great state of Florida.”
Also elected were LaVonne Grayson, second vice president; Dorothy Jackson, secretary; and Francine Garcia, treasurer.
