LAUDERDALE LAKES — Touted as the longest running multicultural event in Lauderdale Lakes, the 19th annual Caribbean celebration Unifest is set to kick off on Sunday, May 19 and run from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m.
Unifest 2013 takes place at the Vincent Torres Park, 4331 N.W. 36th St. Tickets are $10 in Advance, $15 at the gate with free admission for children under 12; visit unifestlive.com
Organizers say the celebration, designed to unify people and show off the Caribbean’s unique, diverse yet rich cultures, has seen 18 successful stagings, attracted more than 8,000 people annually, and is expected to attract more than 10,000 people this year.
Unifest 2013’s fun-filled activities include a display of cultural arts and crafts; popular Caribbean sports and pastimes such as netball, soccer and a Domino Tournament; a Business Expo, Health Fair, and Cultural Corner with emphasis on the commemoration of Haitian Flag Day; an exciting and colorful Carnival Costume Parade; and Flavours of the Caribbean, an array of food from across the Caribbean, featuring popular area restaurateurs showcasing some of their favorite Caribbean dishes.
Patrons are encouraged to bring the kids to the family friendly event to be entertained in a special Kiddie Village.
The newest addition is the Caribbean Jazz Brunch, 12 – 3 p.m., featuring Eugene Grey, Randy Corinthian and Jus’ Cynthia.
The highlight of the night will be Music under the Stars featuring reggae icons Ken Boothe and Ernie Smith, soca/calypso greats Nigel Lewis and Tallpree, Haitian Super Rapper TPO, as well as performances from the popular Jamaican reggae band Code Red, the energetic musical group Caribbean Music Farm and South Florida’s homegrown talent Wade Martin.
This festival kicks off with a sponsors and artists reception on Friday May 17, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. at the Sheraton Suites Hotel, 311 N. University Dr., Plantation.
