MIAMI — Stephanie Mills, Melanie Fiona and Lenny Williams are performing at the second annual Mothers Day Concert hosted by Boris Kodjoe on Sunday, May 12, 7 p.m. at the James L. Knight Center.
As many moms know, Brooklyn, N.Y.-born Mills mesmerized audiences as “the little girl with the big voice” playing the role of Dorothy in The Wiz, the hit Broadway play based on The Wizard of Oz. But mothers also are likely to reminisce over Mills’ million-selling single, Never Knew Love Like This Before.
In addition Mills’ has many R&B hits such as I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love, I Feel Good All Over, (You’re Puttin’) A Rush on Me, Something in the Way (You Make Me Feel), and Home. There also are Mills’ five gold albums: Whatcha Gonna Do with My Lovin’, Sweet Sensation, Stephanie, If I Were Your Woman, and Home.
Fiona hadn’t even released an album when she was being featured in 2008 as the opening act on Kanye West’s European tour. Her debut single, Give It to Me Right, released the following year, took the singer who grew up in inner-city Toronto to the top of the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs charts. Fiona found herself back there with The Bridge, her debut album released in May 2009, with her number one R&B single It Kills Me.
Lenny Williams is best known as the lead singer for Tower of Power, one of the top funk/soul bands of the ’70s. But his solo career preceded and has continued since his Tower of Power days, as has his loyal following.
Actor, model and former tennis star are among the items on the resume of Kodjoe who has become a fixture in movies and on TV.
