MIAMI – Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Jorge E. Cueto has ruled out a third City Hall run for Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones.
Cueto ruled Tuesday in favor of a lawsuit filed by the Rev. Richard P. Dunn III challenging an opinion by City Attorney Julie Bru that the incumbent could run in November because legal problems had prevented her from serving a full second term.
Bru said the city will appeal.
Cueto based his 13-page opinion on a 1999
amendment to the city charter limiting the mayor and commissioners to two consecutive terms in office.
Dunn and Spence-Jones have been locked in a
prolonged struggle over the District 5 seat.
Dunn lost to Spence-Jones three times in eight years when facing the voters. He was selected twice as interim commissioner while Spence-Jones was suspended pending the outcome of state felony charges accusing her of grand theft over $50,000 in government grants involving a family business, followed by a felony bribery charge.
