MIAMI — He has been described as a first-class virtuoso musician whose instrument is his remarkable feet. He has danced on concert stages throughout the world, including the Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, the Smithsonian Institution, Carnegie Hall and the White House.
Savion Glover, the two-time Tony Award-winning choreographer and dancer, will perform an exuberant tap extravaganza, SoLe Sanctuary, as part of his Saturday, April 6, 8 p.m. performance in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 1300 Biscayne Blvd., in Miami. Tickets are $50 – $125. In this acclaimed new production, the world-famous tap dancer, choreographer and actor pays tribute to the great tap dancers of the 20th century, including Sammy Davis Jr. and Gregory Hines, who described Glover as “the greatest tap dancer that ever lived.”
Glover stormed the dance world in the late 1980s, reinventing tap dancing with his hard-hitting style and improvisational choreography, a groundbreaking fusion of jazz, hip-hop, be-bop, and world music patterns and rhythms.
At age 12, Glover made his Broadway debut as The Tap Dance Kid. By 19, he had received the NEA Grant for Choreography, making him the youngest recipient ever.
He went on to win a Tony Award for Best Choreography for Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk, which also brought him an acting nomination.
Other credits include Jelly’s Last Jam on Broadway and the films Tap and Spike Lee’s Bamboozled. He was also tap choreographer for the Oscar-winning film Happy Feet.
Glover also has helped bring his art form to younger generations, sharing his passion for tap dance with aspiring dancers through Savion Glover Productions, which tours schools across the United States.
GLOVER will be joined on stage by Miami native Marshall Davis Jr., who performed in the award-winning Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk.
Miami audiences may remember Davis as the child prodigy who won several tap competitions, including the Tri-Star Pictures Tap Day and Star Search Teen Dance. His career has included stints on Broadway, as well as performances throughout Europe, Japan and the U.S.
