FORT LAUDERDALE — Kwanzaa celebrations kick off at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) with a day full of events on Wed., Dec. 26 from 12 noon – 8:00 p.m.
The AARLCC along with the Ethiopia Africa Black International Congress will celebrate the first day of Kwanzaa by practicing Umoja — the first of the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles of the weeklong cultural celebration — at the center, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale.
Kwanzaa’s other principles are Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose) and Imani (Faith).
In highlighting the unity of family, community, nation and race, participants can expect to partake in panel discussions, youth activities, see live performances and the screening of Africa United.
Vendors will line the lobby with food, jewelry, clothing and more.
Dr. Umar Abdullah John son is keynote speaker for the event. There will also be a panel discussion on ways to help make the principle work in the community next year.
The event is free, with the sponsors asking that attendees bring fruit to add to the community basket which symbolizes Kwanzaa first fruits.
