SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ A hotly-contested Congressional race won narrowly by Democrat Jim Matheson over Republican Mia Love was one of the most expensive in the state's history.
Updated figures from the Federal Election Commission show that a combined $11.2 million was spent by the two candidates and outside political groups. More than half of that came from PACs and Super PACs.
Tim Chambless, a professor at the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, says it is the most expensive race in Utah history.
Matheson won his sixth term in Congress by defeating Love by 768 votes.
Love was trying to become the first black woman elected to Congress as a Republican.
FEC figures also show that $12 million was spent in Utah's U.S. Senate race won by Republican Orrin Hatch.
