COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ A symposium of rare American Face Jug ceramics is wrapping up at the University of South Carolina. The university is hosting a collector's round table Sunday in Harper College on the Columbia campus.
The event has featured discussions and exhibits about the ceramics, which were made in South Carolina in the 19th century. The exhibit looks at the links of the ceramics to the lives of African-Americans, their religion and rituals imported with slaves.
The vessels were made from South Carolina clay and many were produced in the Edgefield region. The jugs had odd-sized eyeballs and teeth, often with frightening grimaces.
The Columbia Museum of Art is hosting a show of the ceramics, which runs through Dec. 16.
