FORT LAUDERDALE – Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Sergeant Mitchell “Mitch" Kogod has been charged with falsifying records.
The Broward State Attorney’s Office had been conducting an investigation into Kogod's alleged overtime and off-duty detail work and so-called 'double-dipping' allegations.
Assistant State Attorney David Schulson was assigned to the case and Kogod was charged with a single count of misdemeanor falsifying records on Tuesday after agreeing to a plea deal.
Kogod had been one of Sheriff Al Lamberti's closest deputies. Details of the plea agreement have not been disclosed.
Among other things, the wide-ranging investigation centered on his off-duty detail work at the L.A. Fitness Club, in Deerfield Beach. He was accused of being paid by the sheriff's office to serve court papers, while at the same time he was also being paid to work off-duty detail assignments at the fitness club.
His arraignment has not been set but the case will be heard before Broward Circuit Court Judge Mardi Levy Cohen.
His attorney Ed McGee, could not be reached, but Kogod had been given a deadline to accept a plea agreement or face multiple felony counts, McGee had previously confirmed.
Kogod was also the target of an anonymous complaint alleging he falsified records related to off-duty detail work when he performed funeral escorts and traffic control.
Kogod was hired in September 1991 and worked in the Civil Division but was reassigned in March and was working in the Oakland Park district, where he earns an $85,030 annual salary.
